I haven't played it since beta, but at that time I got the sense it was a more hardcore western MMO similar in some respects to vanilla WoW.ĮDIT: Also, if you like pre-EQ, more emergent MMOs like Ultima Online (more PvP and simulated systems and crafting, less progression content) check out Albion Online, entering its final stage of early access/beta. I don't personally like Wildstar, but I know a lot of people swear by it. But if you are more open to the cultural tropes there your mileage may vary. Culture gap is just too huge for me - with the sexualized girls in Tera or the presentation in FFXIV. Some people will recommend stuff like Tera or FFXIV but I personally can't do the Korean or Japanese games. I'd steer clear of Star Wars The Old Republic. But it's a really good one that has been very well-maintained over the years, with Mordor content finally coming. While WoW has evolved in new directions, and ESO and GW2 have both reinvented the wheel in some areas, LotRO is still very much a classic MMO. If you can tolerate some fairly egregious F2P stuff going on (which you can mostly get around by subscribing, to be fair) The Lord of the Rings Online is actually still a really great game in a more traditional sense. The endgame content is, IMO, second only to WoW. It feels a little more "game-y" in the sense that the world content is not super story-ified and doesn't have as much character, but the personal story is pretty solid if a bit linear, and the general world gameplay is super fun and open-ended.

The upcoming Morrowind expansion will likely be as good or better than the previous ones like Orsinium, etc. The endgame is not as strong as WoW but the leveling experience is fantastic, and the content patches have been excellent.

I didn't like it when it launched but I'm really starting to enjoy it now.

That said, The Elder Scrolls Online has really made a comeback in recent years. They're not always the best about getting the content and release pacing right, but I don't think other games even feel close in terms of breadth of experiences, content for different types of players, quality/polish, balance, etc. Every expansion has some really bold, sometimes transformational new ideas with everything from questing to progression to encounter design. Nostalgic vanilla players loathe that but I think it's what's kept the game from getting stale over the years. If you haven't played it in a few expansions, I highly recommend it it's the same yet in many ways unrecognizable. Blizzard have done a wonderful job evolving the experience with new ideas. WoW is still, IMO, the best, and with Legion is better than ever.
